AMERICAN
DREAM TOWN 2005
Montauk Woman’s Idea Turns Into A National
Contest For Hometown Pride
By Dan Rattiner of Dan’s Papers (an exerpt
~ reprinted with his permission)
Ingrid
Lemme, a beautiful blonde woman, came to Montauk
in 1980 from Bochum, Germany, to start a new
life. At the time, Nick Monte, the Keeper
of the Inn at the four-star oceanfront resort,
Gurney’s Inn, was looking for a marketing
director. After an initial meeting with Ingrid,
he was convinced that with her bubbling personality,
she could do the job. He was absolutely right.

Dreams come true in Middlebury |
May,
2004 |
|
When Middlebury residents woke up earlier
this year, they realized they were living
in a dream.
American
Dream Towns, an organization of questionable
relevance, named Middlebury "Dream Town
Vermont" in early January after it received
the most votes in an online election. The
town will be featured in a book published
by American Dream Towns that showcases the
country's most attractive small towns.

The
terms Google and American Dream are
peculiar to the language.
Google is an internet search engine.
Because it is now the most used search
engine in the world, the noun google
quickly became a verb. When people look
for something online, they now just
google it. |

The
mayor got it, the presidents of the convention
and visitors bureaus and chambers of commerce
got it, the bank branch manager got it
and it’s spreading fast. The American
Dream Town contest is a virtual contagion.

Ingrid
is now quite well known in this community.
She is an endless promoter and marketer of
Gurney’s, handling everything from press
releases to article placement, from celebrity
interviews that she arranges with various
reporters, to lectures and events that take
place at the Inn. When MTV held their annual
beach party there last year, she was the contact.
Early on, when the Inn would promote their
spa, it was often Ingrid herself who was photographed
in the Roman Bath.
